You shouldn't really be concerned about this "relationship" that much. You're trading your time, life - for money. The fact that there is significant attrition is good for leverage.

If you've been making a significant contribution, go ahead and ask. If the answer is something along the lines of "compensation shouldn't be the main driver for our employees" you know:

a) they don't value you b) they're full of shit
