Well, considering they said that they're running Kubernetes on GCE and not GKE, I don't think your conclusion is forgone at all.

More importantly, GKE _is_ Kubernetes. It's actually a somewhat constrained subset of the full Kubernetes (GKE doesn't have rkt support, for example).

So yeah, if you're handwaving and trying to imply that GKE = lockin... sorry, you're wrong.
