It's true that a phrase like "name calling" doesn't really communicate much—it's really just shorthand for a more complex model of how this community functions. I took a shot at trying to write a more detailed explanation here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13412325.

It's actually tricky to articulate these things in detail, and takes a lot of time and energy that are usually in short supply, which is why we usually don't. Perhaps I should write a longer piece about it that we could link readers to in the future.
