Yes, that era ended with Win7.

Win8, Win8.1, Win10 ... not so much, hostile to the user, bad UI, sends data home, a train wreck, and the forced update, don't get me started. If they ever want to turn around, they need to make a u-turn and fire the responsible guys asap. And revert back to Win7 and WinAPI. (Yes the underpinning is still WinNT based and might be a slight improvement, but contains so many bad decisions like whitelisting various phone home IPs in kernel mode network driver, that's it's time to stop and revert). This Metro/Silverlight, Universal nonesense doesn't fly anyway, a store without apps. My bet is on Google Fuchsia (or Android, ChromeOS) to take over desktop til 2020.
