Ask HN: Being on call or not?

1 points| danny_sf45 | 5 years ago

The company I work for is planning to have some engineers on call to keep our services reliable and available. It's payed and it's not mandatory. The thing is: one has to be on call for a group of "related" services and not only for the services one has written code for. I don't have anything against being on call for the stuff I (and my team) write, but I definitely don't want to be on call for other's people stuff (my title in the company is software engineer, not SRE).

Under these circumstances, nobody in my team wants to be on call (managers accept this since it's not mandatory). I am the tech lead of my team, and I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to do it, but I don't think it's responsible to be the only team that has zero people on call.

How does it work in your company? I am being too extreme by saying "I don't want to be on call for stuff I didn't write"?
