Almost every manufacturer of electronics does something similar. It allows them to sell products at multiple price points without having to retool for literally every single SKU they make. Instead the only thing that's different is firmware and maybe some drivers.

This is not new. It's been going on for decades, and there's nothing wrong with it. You're getting exactly what you pay for and if you didn't pay for all the features... you don't get them.
