Ask HN: Adding fulltext search to large Mariadb table

I have a large Mariadb table (>300GB) that I want to get full text search on, but running ALTER on it (and adding fulltext index) will take absolutely ages.

What innovative and cost effective options would you recommend?

Did I mention this is a production instance..
