Ask HN: Get hired with a portfolio of coding projects?

Hello all, I am working a retail job right now, but I would like to switch gears and land a coding job. I have built things with Python, Drupal, WordPress, HTML/CSS, and Bash. All of my programming knowledge at this point is self-taught. How difficult is it to get up to speed and produce a portfolio that will get me hired?
