This might look like insanity to most people but it's actually an extremely intelligent move. If something happens to him, he will become a martyr and I am not sure if Putin can handle the ensuing social unrest. It also makes Putin seem powerless and emboldens his opposition.

It is terrifying to think what might happen next given Putin’s likely rage at Nalvany’s refusal to give in or give up.
Hopefully the knowledge that the world is watching, closer than ever, will have some impact...
