I have been pretty sceptical about Matrix in the past. It's been going on for years and the promises have been high. However, in practice big changes related to encryption were still necessary only last year. The little I have used it performance problems could not go unnoticed.
That said I was deeply impressed that they could arrange FOSDEM on Matrix pretty smoothly. Maybe they still prove my pessimism wrong...
