Ask HN: How do you react to a promotion?

2 points| rby21 | 4 years ago

I got a promotion after a long time. (Based on the performance, I should have got long ago. But I never asked for it. And the usual office politics, favoritism didn't help either). Hardly any difference in terms of compensation. (Just a low single digit hike.) Two questions.

1. I saw it in workday portal. My manager is yet to have a meeting with me to inform. How should I react when he informs?. I appreciate the fact that they finally acknowledged my efforts. They have very limited budget. But if I sound happy, they may take me for granted again. ( Please note, it was because of skip level manager that I got this promo. I don't think my direct manager had any influence)

2. I was fed up with the overall environment and was planning to do the minimum required work.( Difficult to implement though, since I was always passionate). But now that I got the promotion, the expectation will be high. Hence it will be difficult. So I am confused with this promotion.

Have you been in this position?. How did you handle ?

Even though I enjoy work mostly I've learned to take a mental tally of the hours and stressful moments vs. pay. In my personal situation it seems to me that certain promotions aren't worth it. Basically I don't think its worth it to me to take on extra responsibilities that I'm not going to enjoy for a marginally higher compensation. That means I'll never be high up in the org chart but thats fine. Based upon what you are describing I'd decline the promotion and it may push them to negotiate higher compensation for the additional work.

Thanks. I agree with you. I dont think I can decline it since its already reflected in the system. That will look odd. Negotiation wont look good either since they dont have the budget. Anyways lets see.
