I remember the Sheffield ones well from the early 90's.

I imagine Sheffield University are stuck with them, there simply isn't enough space in the building core for conventional lifts to meet the requirement to move a lot of students up and down the building in the short space of time between lectures. I do remember the conventional lifts being quite big, but with long waits.
