Descartes was a deep skeptic and this statement was the one thing he could irrefutably believe must be true. Everything else is various degrees of speculation.
There is a saying, "Neither a lender nor a borrower be.". At some point I twisted that in my mind to "Neither a leader nor a follower be" and have tried to live by both.
