The rapidly declining cost to store files and the performance of modern computers is to blame for this old opinion becoming irrelevant. That and adoption of drivers for raw formats and support from the hardware manufacturers so that all popular operating systems can use official decoders rather than ad-hoc decoders (read dcraw - David Coffin's open source decoder library in C from the early 2000's).
