The article missed the big picture: it's all about tribalism through shared, wacky beliefs like conspiracy theories. QAnon, "microchipping" vaccines, the Big Lie, flat earth, etc. What the pandemic proves is at least 50% of fellow Americans are gullible, inconsiderate morons.
