The Barras, what a place that was back then. A bizarre bazaar chock full of cheap crap, knock offs and "stuff off the back of a lorry" (literally).
I'm probably the same age as Zippy but wasn't really part of any "scenes" due to my rather rural location back then. My first decent crack was defeating disk based BBC Elite's protection. I did this more out of curiosity and to be able to have a backup in case the original disks stopped working (20-25 quid was a lot of money back then for me). If I remember rightly there was a bunch of self modifying code that took a few days to unravel and then that "tada" moment. I also got a hardware based disk bit copier from one of the usual outfits (Watford Electronics?) to make my life easier for the odder stuff. But it's nearly 40 years ago and my memory is now a bit hazy.
I cracked a few other games and apps along the way but became more interesting in coding and tinkering about with my modem. However those early days of illicit hacking about did teach me a few things about how to debug effectively, especially code I've never seen before.
