Ever since I got my first iPhone around 2009 I've always set all of my notifications to off, everything from phone calls to SMS, and all the apps. Not one single notification pops up. Unless I'm expecting an important call I don't feel like I should be notified for everything. It has worked great for me and not getting distracted as much.
