Tell HN: the HN flagging system has become a tool of cancel culture.

When the cancel culture arrives, when the cancel mob arrives on Hacker News, they flag and they flag hard.

HN’s flagging system has become a tool of cancel culture.

All you need to do to cancel a message you disagree with is hit “flag”.

If you’re wanting to feel offended, hit “flag”.

If you’re part of the culture police, hit “flag”.

If you hold the most righteous social position, hit “flag”.

If you decide it’s not socially acceptable, hit flag and it’s booted off HN. That’s you need to do to cancel a person or a topic on HN.

Somehow cancel culture has to stop somewhere.

HN must end the flag which has become the tool of the cancel mob.

“Flag” may as well be called “cancel”, it amounts to exactly the same thing.

The same could be said about downvotes. You ought to remember that we're all guests here on HN, that HN is private property, and that we have no free speech rights. Otherwise dang couldn't threaten to ban me for using a common slur against rural Americans.

If you want to exercise mostly unfettered freedom of speech, you need your own website. Preferably one not tied to your "real name" that doesn't show photos of you or mention your day job.
