The matrix is a right example on some levels, but thematically it is very far off. Existing underground infrastructure like subways, sewers, tunnels for cars, conference centers and bunkers so on are all more indicative of what it would feel like. They already exist and they don't have a matrexian feel to feel to them.
Here are some examples of what I mean by existing underground infrastructure not feeling like the matrix:
If you've ever been to a region where a hundred different freeways intersect and there are a bunch of high rise buildings nearby just imagine all of that moved down into the Earth vertically so as to maximize protection and converted to an aesthetically optimized version of our current underground infrastructure.
