I'm sorry this had to happen to you. I know how it feels because something like this happened to me. And it happened to me at a silicon valley startup. Except the story ended differently, it ended up with me quitting. They were so angry at me that my mother died at the end of a quarter. But the same thing, don't worry we'll take care of you, followed by absolute callousness that was, worst of all, disrespectful towards my deceased mother.

The way I see it is now you know what your company is capable of and how they value you. You can find someone better to work for.

Do you think this would have happened if you weren't employed through a contractor?

Nope. I would have had better bereavement pay and more legal recourse. There's a long story about how I was meant to brought in house but the employer dropped the ball there as well.
