The greatest gift to my technological knowledge has been HN. The vast treasure trove of tips, tricks, tidbits, guidance, and wonder I have been given is a great thing. Though the World Wide Web has gone cold and misty in many ways, there are still many Santas riding through HN, coming down my chimney, and delivering me shiny wisdom every morning. Cheers to you all!!
For a while now, this site has felt to me like one of the last bastions of high-quality discussion on the internet. Many days, it's the first thing I open in the morning and/or the last at night, and I sure am thankful that amid the firestorm of superficial engagement maximization platforms, there's at least one site that consistently leaves me feeling more informed, enlightened, and rational. Happy Holidays, HN!
I’d just like to take a moment to say how much I appreciate HN and all the work put in by dang and the moderation team. Everyone here really cares about keeping discussions lively and respectful. This is a wonderful community to be a part of!
Strongly agree. I'm deeply disappointed with the depth of discourse in other internet communities which implement upvoting; the highest voted comments are usually shallow hot takes or low-effort jokes. However, on HN the most substantial and interesting comments are the ones that typically find their way to the top of the discussion. I can't remember the last time I ever learned anything new and interesting from any other social media site, whereas the HN community continuously offers a wealth of deliberately considered perspectives.
Major thanks to the HN community and those who keep it running!
Agreed. Kinda makes you wonder why other communities haven’t been able to reproduce the level of quality and civility (I know HN is still far from perfect, but night and day vs. other platforms).
A great community to be a part of, and much appreciation to those that oversee and contribute to the high quality and respectful discussions.
As someone who has moderated forums in the past, I 100% concur that I don't know that HN is what it is without dang. And I also still can't fully wrap my mind around how he and the team have been able to guardrail the discourse to keep it as high quality as it is...especially over the last few years.
It's insanely impressive, and I'm incredibly grateful that this community exists.
I kind of agree with this. It’s like I have my grievances with the HN community, and I think there are times where articles get flagged because they are of a certain bent, but mostly it is surprisingly fair.
I’ve been (rightly) chastised by dang, though generally I try not to troll. (Sorry to those I’ve been a troll too)
For the most part I don’t know a better place to have discussions of the kind you can have here.
Happy holidays, and Merry Christmas if you’re so inclined, and a happy new year!
HN is my favorite daily read, the incredible amount of knowledge gained through this site has been one of the greatest gifts which I get to enjoy every day!
Not sure how you all see it, but in my experience people rub off on other people. We are, to some degree who we hang with. I choose to hang here because I am better for it, and say that unabashedly! So many of you have had an impact on me, some small, some larger than you will know.
Thank you all for all the bits of knowledge, perspective, curios, life stories, experiences and more! These are the things I am better for. I see many different kinds of voices, ages, stations in life here, and appreciate that we all share a little bit of our time and ourselves. It's both worth what you paid and priceless!
Been a tough couple of years for many of us. May you and yours grow and prosper, laugh, play, build, love, explore and live well and long into the future!
@dang & Co. -->You should feel good about what this little place on the Internet is. Thank you and others behind the scenes who remain willing to insure it continues to exist. Seriously appreciated.
Happy holidays, HN. I just want to say a few things about the community.
I'm an undergrad dabbling in software development. I don't remember how I stumbled upon HN but I'm so glad I did! I used to search randomly for good articles, links, resources, tools, books, etc. And HN is a treasure trove of those.
Heck, I use HN Algolia as a search engine! Want some resources about SQL? Search for "learn SQL". Want to know about a software? Search "caddy" and know in-depth opinions.
And the discussions. Even reading the comments feel so insightful sometimes.
I can't even comprehend how the top-notch moderation is done. It just makes me go, dang, that's amazing.
People here care about simplicity, performance, minimalism. People here care about making, learning and growth. They care about privacy. They are critics. They are skeptics (in a good way). People here are experienced. It is always so surreal to me when I see a news like "Y gets N Million Series F" and the CEO of Y is just waiting in the comments like "Hey HN! x here, happy to answer any questions :)".
Obviously there are trolls, people who spread unnecessary negativity but it's again refreshing to see them downvoted to opacity: 0;
All in all, I'm really grateful for HN, the people in it and its /moderators?/. I'll continue to use HN as what it is for me. A place to seek resources, insightful content, fun tools, advice, rational discussions and constructive opinions.
Thank you, HN. Happy holidays to you and your families!
The only site that I visit every day multiple times without fail. I can't remember a single day that I have not been on HN in the last 5 years. There's a lot I have learned and it would be silly on my part to say that I haven't been entertained. So a huge Thank you to HN and particularly the moderation team for all that you do. Happy Holidays !
As the world has gotten more divided and angry, it is easy to get swept up in the discourse, much of which can be intense.
I hope that this time of year grants many of us the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on our shared humanity.
In the thousands of years that human civilization has progressed, we have had some bad ideas and some good ideas. I think of Christmas as a time of year where we can all, regardless of our religious views, appreciate one of our best ideas: that we can all find it within ourselves once a year to sacrifice something... anything - our time, a little spare change, a friendly gesture or even just spreading some festive cheer, because we want to do something nice for someone else and make their day just a little bit better.
Represent the NWA! One of my best friends just moved to Fayetteville. I've not had a chance to visit yet but hear great things (open minded bi-coastal here)
This is incredible! While just controlling the soprano, it does the voice leading for all the other voices and composes together actual chord progressions. I don't have a good enough ear to determine whether it actually stay in the same key, but I could definitely hold it on a dominant chord and then it would resolve to the tonic as I moved. I even heard a suspension thrown in there!
