The glasses are 3D LCD shutter glasses. They sync the frame rate of the shutter to the video output using to the box on top of the monitor. This is a old school version of what the 3D TVs are doing now. In the 1990s it seemed like every day there was some new Virtual Reality device or at least talk of it, people were waiting for their own holodeck but it never arrived VR faded away.
