It's always going to be something lightweight and probably tiling for me. Right now I'm using Sway because I'm doing the Wayland thing and I'm a sucker for /r/unixporn type desktops.

That being said eventually you end up with both the Gnome and KDE libraries anyway - plus a handful of Electron apps are unavoidable today.

If, like I do, you need visibility hacks, KDE is the clear winner. Gnome's screen zoom has a fixed magnification level, whereas KDE lets you zoom in and out arbitrarily. And KDE lets you invert the colors of the focused window with a keyboard shortcut; Gnome offers no such thing.

I used to prefer Gnome. Thought KDE was gross. And then I tried KDE.

Personally, I like WMs. Awesome is the best one I've experienced.

fvwm. Light, customisable, works as expected, does not try to be smart, does not get in the way.
