I read that there is another technical deadline looming: apparently the maps in the planes' navigations systems need to be updated every 2-3 weeks for some of the systems to function, and the updates have been suspended as well. Maybe someone here has some further resources on that?

Yes. In the US, all of the FAA charts and descriptions expire after a few weeks and it is not legal to fly with them, in order to keep everyone current. I'm guessing other governments have similar rules.

Note: this is about civil/commercial aviation, not military aviation.

Does Iran face similar sanctions? They've somehow been keeping their old Airbus and Boeing fleets flying for decades. And Russia likely has much more aviation resources and know how than Iran does.

Why do commercial airliners in Russia prefer Boeing/Airbus over domestic models? Are the Western planes cheaper to operate?

TLDR: The era of Chinese aviation has begun.

China has 5x more population yet their planes aren’t taking over the world.
