Hopefully this guy will never be able to touch library maintenance. Changes between versions are logged in the ChangeLog btw.

Of course it's fine to add dates and git commits to a version, esp. internal developer versions. But semantic versioning is still critical for compatibility. Did it break the API, is the API new or changed, or are there just patches/bugfixes?
