I've been working on this during nights and weekends for the past several months.
As someone who enjoys finding and trying new places to eat, I've gotten tired of scrolling through the same results on Yelp and Google Maps. Over time, I've realized some of the best places I've been were based on the opinions of trusted sources.
Gwak is a mobile app where you follow specific people for more curated recommendations. You can follow friends or specific influencers and you will only see recommendations from these people.
As a reviewer you:
1. comment on restaurants
2. add them to lists (e.g. Best SF Coffeeshops, Brunch spots in Brooklyn)
3. share with others
As you review places, these get added to an auto-generated web profile (so you can share your lists of restaurants even with people without a Gwak account). Here's an example: [1].
I also include a list of the award winning restaurants (Michelin and James Beard) because I've never found a place that actually aggregates these and shows me which are nearby.
Stack:
* React Native (using the Hermes Engine), Expo managed
* Hasura on top of Postgres
* Remix deployed on fly.io with tailwind
* Dokku on Digital Ocean
Thanks and I appreciate any thoughts, questions, and feedback!
Nothing major yet for this MVP. I did make a change from postgraphile to Hasura mid-way through since I felt like it was more batteries-included.
More than regret, I was surprised by how good React Native has gotten recently and how much leverage that affords me as someone familiar with React on the web. I'm impressed by its performance and how native-like it feels in terms of smoothness.
