GNOME's design choices are either extremely good or extremely bad. I like the general workflow, but the panel looks like some crummy i3 config. You could almost get rid of GNOME's panel altogether, placing the network icon etc on the "Applications" view. You can't even switch Audio or Bluetooth devices using the panel. It's dead real estate.
