- Auto sears are not illegal. There are massive restrictions on ownership of them in the US, but law abiding citizens can own them. With the right paperwork (as a manufacturer) you can even legally make them.
- Auto sears aren't a "workaround for people who cannot obtain an AR or AK legally". The article mentions "ghost guns" repeatedly; building the restricted parts of an AR or an AK can be done with minimal tools depending on what your fit and finish looks like. Everything else can be bought online.
Not to mention that the number of AR/AKs (and their variants) in the United States that are not semi-automatic (one trigger pull, one shot) is so low that they are not statistically significant. Select fire rifles are prohibitively expensive, and require additional government paperwork, checks, and fees. Shoehorning them into an auto sear discussion is either fear mongering or ignorance, neither of which should get past an editor's desk.
$20 device is illegal to import or possess for 99% of Americans, but a lot of criminals have them anyways. (And essentially no otherwise law abiding Americans do) You should support more gun laws to make other things besides this illegal too!
If someone is after me with a gun, having him use up all his ammo in 1 second is probably good for me. They call that kind of shooting spray and pray for a reason.

Anyway, here's how a 3D printed autosear works for an AR15. FYI the plastic'll run you about a buck or so. https://gunstreamer.com/watch/ar15-3d-printed-autosear-demo-...
