That's a pretty short termist comment.. this is part of the plan to tackle and reduce co2 emissions and has nothing to do with reducing overall costs.. besides, I don't know if you noticed but electricity is not the only form of energy which has skyrocketed in price, gas/diesel has is currently very expensive in Europe as well. Since your alternative (ice vehicle) has become proportionally as expensive, the cost benefit of electric cars still holds.

It is not possible to drive a combustion engine from sources other than fossil fuels (except in very rare circumstances).
Removing fossil-fuel burning cars from the road reduces the national fuel burden, making the generation of electricity cheaper.
