Show HN: Invest in Airbnbs Like Stocks

Hey HN - I’m Ryan, the co-founder of Arrived.

We made it possible to buy shares of vacation rentals, starting from $100. Investors earn the booking income & property appreciation from being an owner, without all of the work typically involved.

Airbnb’s can be a killer business. They have helped vacation rental owners generate over $150 Billion in rental income from serving a billion guest arrivals, but less than 0.5% of these guests have been able to participate in the owner side of the Airbnb economy.

Arrived is the first company with SEC Qualified offerings to buy shares in individual properties like this. We launched rental home investing last year and have funded $55m in rental homes across the country so far. And we are excited to launch vacation rental investing on our platform this week. Would love any feedback on our vacation rental launch.

Are you concerned that the proliferation of Airbnb properties and other short-term rentals is contributing to the affordable housing shortage we are seeing across the U.S.? A killer business indeed.

I'm part of the 99.5% of non-airbnb investors Arrived is ostensibly trying to expand to. I like the potential of micro-investment, but right now it's not socially tenable for me personally to tell my friends I'm an Airbnb investor.

Airbnb's biggest personal impact for myself and them has not been as a vacation vendor, but as an entity radically transforming our neighborhoods and access to housing. Does Arrived have any standard in terms of community impact?

We look for properties that are in high tourist and vacation destinations. With this model we think a lot more people can invest together, in some cases 500-1,000 in one property. Right now those same vacation properties are traditionally owned by one person.

What's your take on the housing crisis and whether what you're building will exacerbate or improve the situation?

I can't think of anything that can go wrong with this. This would be a great satire website idea.

Didn't see anything in the FAQ about acquiring existing AirBnB rentals. Curious to know if you make offers on existing homes with proven track records?

We like to partner with current Airbnb operators and they also help facilitate the day to day management. There is a "Partner with Arrived" link on our header

I hope your company never makes it to the EU. The notion of housing as an investment rather than a basic human need has priced many people out of the market, and Airbnb's have impacted the availability of rental stock exacerbating the housing issue in many locales further.

For anyone interested in giving it a try, here is a signup code for $50 in shares in any of the properties: "hackernews". Thanks!

Where do you enter the code?
