Let's be honest... emoji are cute and fun and add visual interest to conversations. But they are also ambiguous, impossible to alter with adjectives or adverbs, and subject to cultural bias.
The reason that the alphabet took over is because text is the most concise and clear way to communicate ideas -- whether code or prose.
