I think you just need a bigger monitor. There are a lot of situations where multiple windows are the way to go. A designer needs to have the style guide PDF open while working with Photoshop, or an accountant needs to have its banking website on sight alongside the ERP.
It might be possible for small tasks though.

Large laptop screens (>15") can be sufficient here, but two external monitors are priceless.
