I don't quite get the appeal of a planner, or how you're supposed to use one.

I assume you don't carry one around with you, so how do you make or discuss plans when not home?

Are they primarily just an aid to retention via that effect where pen and paper helps people remember things, and the really "planner" is your brain?

Or do people do most of their thinking and planning at home, so they don't really need portability?

Seems like it would be good for someone with a family who has lots of appointments that are made and planned at home.

It also seems like it could be really good for appearances sake, if you meet with a lot of nontechnical clients who might feel more comfortable seeing you with paper, so they know you're actually working.

There are several reasons why people use planners. For some, it is a way to organize their appointments, tasks, and other commitments in one place. This can be especially helpful for people who have a lot of commitments or who need to coordinate with others. By having everything written down in one place, it is easier to see what needs to be done and when.

For others, using a planner can be a way to help them remember things. Studies have shown that writing things down can help people retain information better, so a planner can serve as a kind of memory aid.

Planners are not necessarily meant to be carried around with you all the time. Some people prefer to keep their planner at home and refer to it when they need to make or discuss plans. Others may prefer to carry their planner with them so they can make updates or refer to it while they are out and about.

In terms of meeting with clients, having a planner can certainly give the appearance of being organized and on top of things. However, it is not necessary to have a planner in order to be organized or effective at work. Some people prefer to use digital tools for planning and organization, while others may find that a planner works better for them. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.
