Why all these duplicate submissions at HN?

Seems to be happening way often. Is it hard to point out duplicate submission during submission so these just would not happen?

Some observant HN users simply past prior HN links into recent posts on the same topic.

That, of course, is not a solution given the nature of how HN us used: see a cool page, drop it in HN - without looking first to see if it's already there.

There are, of course, technical solutions to the problem.

An automated/AI/community system for merging/filtering/tagging duplicates would be nice

Now you basically just have to know there's a dupe account/link, say "flagged for dupe", etc.... sorta clunky, I agree
