I am fortunate enough to have had John as a professor. He truly cares about his teaching and his students. Each Friday, he would end the class with a life lesson/a question to think about over the weekend unrelated to the course content, just trying to help us think about how to lead more fulfilling lives. I have a lot of respect for him as a human being, on top of his contributions to the field.

Echoing this. One of his favorite such lessons was, "a little bit of slope make up for a lot of Y-intercept". It's easy to get demoralized encountering someone way more skilled than you. But the right response is to learn from them and accelerate your own growth.
