The issue I see is that humans seem to have many of the same problems as the ones they point out ml systems can have.

AI is just a way of absolving a human of responsibility. Responsibility for what? Anything - just put an algorithm in front of a person's decision and suddenly it's an objective immutable truth.

Yes, but we at least try to hold humans accountable (i.e. a feedback loop). Adding these AI systems without a clear mechanism for a feedback loop is going to make things worse.
