Discord is one of the last widely used, user-friendly messaging platform, that doesn't require phone number verification at sign-up.

it's a fool's errand to beg for such a thing, that'd cut off discord's primary revenue stream. A more sensical solution(sadly https://xkcd.com/927/) would be to create a clone of discord's interface, and point it to an existing, more popular chat backend. Personally despite matrix going more in the direction of being a discord-like, it still has plenty of metadata-leaking yuckyness. Discord is certainly ahead in this race, but hopefully we can eventually move on to a standard owned by the people, and which doesn't blackbox so much valuable knowledge
