Show HN: Global Pomodoro every 30 minutes

56 points| mr_kotan | 2 years ago |pomodorr.io

I love using the Pomodoro technique with my friends. We each share what we want to accomplish in 25 minutes, work together, and then take a 5-minute break to discuss our progress.

Recently, I had an idea to take this concept to the next level. If you think about it, 25 + 5 = 30 minutes - the perfect amount of time for a global Pomodoro session to start every half hour.

After several evenings of brainstorming and collaboration, I'm excited to introduce Pomodorr.io. This platform allows individuals from around the world to come together and work on their projects during these global Pomodoro sessions.

So, meet Pomodorr.io. Every 30 minutes, a global pomodoro kicks off in the world. There is a general chat to feel the shoulder of remote colleagues in terms of efficiency. You can meet me and my friends there almost every day.

Checking the chat, it appears it is filled with a lot of low-effort type stuff, something akin to a twitch chat. Are these personal friends or something? I like the idea but that chat ruins it a bit.

You can probably open Developer Tools and remove the entire DOM node if it distracts you so much.

To OP, a "light board" of "I got it done!" where people can mark that they accomplished their Pomodoro would be an interesting feature. With a big disclaimer that it's based on self-reporting and the honor system. OTOH it might be demotivating for some people, so an option to turn it off would be good too.

Maybe even have a streak mode ("20 Pomodoros today!"), but I guess some people will game this for bragging rights, even though no one will know who they are. A way around this is probably to reset it every midnight (UTC), and only allow the maximal number (e.g. at 10:00 AM UTC, only 30 Pomodoros are possible) so no one can brag to have done a gazillion Pomodoros today.

Sounds like BeReal for work (- the pictures) :) Pomodoro doesn't work for me, but it'd be fun to see if people can stick to this.

This needs to be a widget on my lockscreen and/or menu bar on my computer.

I find 50 + 10 is a good approach for meetings and events over 2+ hours, like when you have multiple speakers or a workshop. That gives everyone a chance for a regular toilet or comfort break.

I like the idea, but the website seems to freeze instantly on mobile chromium, and I see a blurred chat with what seems like a lot of spam

I think I fixed that. Thank you for the feedback

Great idea, but that is the most toxic chat I have seen since Youtube when it first came out. You need filters asap in there.

Indeed, I think it's temporary thing. I will add chatgpt moderation.

I've added moderation with chatgpt

Love the idea because it feels like I have less control over the timer (which I shouldn't have!)

I don't get it. Why should I use this instead of a basic timer?

The feeling of community. If you _feel_ like you are with a community then you are more likely to stick with it. Presumably that's why there is a chat.

Interesting idea, I'll see how long I can stick to it.
