Notable Efforts to Democratize AI/ML?

Over the past year, I've become increasingly convinced that the most important thing I could be working on right now is seizing the means of production of powerful ML. Joking aside, I'm interested in projects that are working to give more folks more control of modern AI tools. If you know of any efforts in this area I'd love to hear about them!

In particular, interested in ML companies whose business plan does not involve building a data moat or maintaining control of the model training process. I'd also be interested in open source efforts working to copy/outperform Big Corp's products. Ideal mission would be working on open models trained using open data on open hardware, but realistically looking to work on some subset of that.
