I would imagine the person who did it might have kept the gun, and probably couldn't keep their mouth shut about either killing or being involved in one of the most known unsolved murders of our time. Pure speculation but they may have told the wrong person who then went and told the right people.

The body has already been autopsied.
It would be crazy for the weapon to be found 27 years later.
It would also be crazy for someone to have documented the crime or a confession.
Maybe someone buried something and then moved or died?
