What do tech people look for on the internet?

I am trying to understand when people from tech join a new platform talking about professional networking/work profiles - what do they look for?

Other than fomo, what made you join a particular platform?

These days I only leave platforms.

I want a source of interesting content and a pleasant community to discuss it. Aside from HN there are very few places like that.

What are the other few places that you go to for interesting content/community?

I joined linkedin because it seemed a reasonable way to manifest myself as being an actually employable person, in particular, being able to build a graph of the people I know (and know me) and write/receive written recommendations. Not so much for the recruiter stuff, but my profile there gives me a bit of additional credibility, that, at least other people who know stuff, say that I know stuff too.

I'm very much not looking to join any "platforms", I don't consider HN a platform, but for instance Mastodon, which I recently lost all respect for, I didn't have to leave that though, I was kicked out (for saying that people shouldn't be discriminated based on the color of their skin, on a BLM+LGBTQ++whathaveyouallthewokeness friendly server of all places).

You're not allowed to say that because, in the wokeness version of reality, discrimination against white people is not only acceptable but encouraged. You must discard all sense of logic and fairness when you venture into that world.

Good point. If there is any other platform providing a community specifically from people of your work domain, will you consider joining it?
