They did. I can't do many simple math problems in my head anymore like people who came before me.

I can barely read a map. But hardly anyone uses them now. Most people cannot at all. Many adults don't know what their country's chief city is. It's bonkers.

Think of it this way, if our civilization becomes all great towers of adamantium steel and diamond crystal windows, and no human thought went into it, and none of our progeny live in it and no one understands it, it isn't life at all. Progress is not more valuable than life. If progress means people must die for it for no reason that people are a problem: people will take issue even if they are powerless to resist.
