Penitentiaries are supposed to engender penitence.

"Maybe I am part of 'the problem'." Having that observation, becoming humble, and owning up to one's mistakes is very hard to do.

In fact, short of the world burning to ashes, many sociopaths would never reach the conclusion that they are a cause of the woes around them.

THAT is why you imprison criminals and make their lives terrible, to give them a chance for penitence such that they can reform.
