Seems like the main factor here is going to be round-trip latency, not throughput - i.e. it's going to depend on your geographic location, more than it needs to.

Many, many sites are slow when on the front page of HN. Anecdotally it loads in under 10s for me.

it's a valid comment though. For a game like that, loading more than 10 seconds makes no sense on normal machines with fast connections.
