Xtra still works on Android. Open Source and not ad ridden.

https://f-droid.org/packages/com.github.andreyasadchy.xtra/

>Xtra for Twitch is a Twitch client focused on providing the best viewing and chatting experience on mobile devices:

* Support for popular emotes with BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ plugins

* Watch VODs and clips with chat replay

* Download VODs to watch offline

* Continue watching outside of the app with Pic ture-in-Picture mode

* Sleep timer to stop the stream automatically

* Customizable interface with 3 different color themes

Twitch’s overall UX since I got into it has always seemed fundamentally about funneling you into a live stream as soon as possible and nothing else. If the entire Software and Gaming Dev community there kick off an alternative that would be such a great thing overall (does this exist?) but the big dev streamers would likely never make that sacrifice. Let Twitch be for gaming or whatever their current strategy is, but please, dev streamers, I beg you.

Wasn’t there a Show HN a few months ago where the dev had live streaming integrated with interacting with the running code? That’s what I want to see get big. Lemme see if I can find it now that it came to mind

There's a concept that captured me, called Gruen transfer[1].

> the Gruen transfer is the moment when consumers enter a shopping mall or store and, surrounded by an intentionally confusing layout, lose track of their original intentions, making them more susceptible to making impulse buys.

It started with shopping malls, later affected e-commerce, and now the media industry as a whole (specifically here with livestreaming).

Seems like we have hit peak distraction by design here too. Not sure this is a valuable term to rally around, but it definitely describes the modern woes of every platform and service.

What's the plan for twitch?

Seems like they filled a niche that YouTube didn't in the past, but YouTube seems to have addressed a lot of the problems that turned folks to twitch (from speaking with folks who stream/watch streamers).

You post this like people are doing some mass exodus

I'm still sour about all the camgirls on Twitch to even know when it gets updated. Let me know when they finally clean up the website and it becomes family friendly again.

I think it's easier to ignore them now. Although my experience of Twitch is limited to watching middle aged men play games from the early 2000s.

Genuine question: what is wrong with the platform having camgirls?

(I'm neither a Twitch user nor a camgirl)

Are the majority of game-focused streamers "family friendly?" That's not the impression I've ever gotten from twitch or, frankly, from gamers. In a few dozen hours of online gaming I've been called more unprintable slurs than in the entire rest of my life combined.

That this is a link to old.reddit.com is just perfect.

since adblocking no longer is easy on twitch, my usage has dropped to literally 0. I wish everyone had such a persistent stance against ads - then we wouldn't be in all this mess.

I cannot express just how much I _dont_ want twitch to just start playing some random fucking stream when I open it.

Whose brain dead idea was this?

The new app sucks balls too. I just want to go back to viewing a list of my subscriptions. I don't need the most active one shoved in my face.
