Gosh, that sounds just like a number of little kids I knew, decades ago - whose "best friends" were stuffed animals. Or some older folks (meaning ages 8 to 88) I've known, whose "best friends" were their favorite books, or favorite author.
While "AI" doubtless gets the clicks, it has very little to do with the underlying human problems.
