It’s not the coffee that costs 7$ it’s mostly the building that coffee shop is in. Rent it’s the largest cost component.

aka - should inflation just go forever. "Eating out" is just ridiculous these days. I favour hole in the wall type places where its an honest meal - and prices make sense...when i go to a pub - and my friends pay $20+ for a damn burger , and sometimes it doesnt come wih fries - i just think "damn a sucker is born every minute".

This article isn't about inflation. This is about how global supply issues have pushed up the cost of coffee beans, while many NZ cafes are absorbing it by pricing lower than it "should" be based on cost.

The article isn't saying that coffee in NZ costs $7, it's asking if it ought to given that many costs in producing it have gone up, while cafes keep pricing it less than what consumers could expect to pay if those costs were passed on to them.
