I thought that way too. Until I found myself and see others just trying to "fill the gap in the air" with meaningful basic topics, that only makes the conversation weirder...basic topics are great for first 20min, then you just spend your energy for nothing. And for many people it's hard to find right question to boost the meaningful conversation. Having this questions in mind - is a great skill, that hard to get especially if you're not that social person, but want friends. Icebreaking question are not a 'silver bullet', but a mean to reflect on topic that energies you to talk and help you find your 'soul'.
