High end standalone VR is dead as Apple very publicly proved to everyone

stemlord|1 year ago

Apple doesn't really build products for niche markets. Serving niche markets doesn't mean death to the sane buisness owner

Nonsense. Now that Quest Pro has exited the market, everyone in the high-end consumer VR segment will come clamoring for a chance to buy Apple's headset.

Because everyone knows; spending thousands of dollars on a VR headset with no content is a purchase nobody regrets, whether they buy Meta or Apple's hardware.

Apple has never released a VR headset

I hope HTC can keep the torch burning. They're a small player against some real giants. Their newest headset has two USB-C ports, even though it already has eye tracking built in (unlike Quest). Making it more open ended is good for the ecosystem, users and could reduce obsolescence.

For what its worth, I have a Quest Pro and am quite happy with it. I don't use VR a ton, but compared to the Quest 2 I preferred the Quest Pro hands down. I have not tried the Quest 3 to compare though. That said, I thought it was already discontinued already a year ago.

I gave my Quest away as soon as Facebook bought the company. The requirement to have a Facebook account was not a bridge that I wanted to cross. As far as I am concerned the product line is dead.

You no longer need to a Facebook account.

Canceling our weekly stand up in the Metaverse. Don't worry, though, AI is definitely gonna be the thing.

Any alternatives that come with face tracking? That is what the standout feature was to me

The hardware is obsolete. It was only ever really meant to be an early dev kit for Quest 3.
