I had exactly the same feeling. I've spent most of my career working on software for investment banks in the UK and at the end of the day you can't show your work to anyone (even if they cared) and you only get paid for the time worked. I'd known for years and years I wanted to build my own business but waited until I was in a financially feasible position to do so.
